Weekend Football Preview

A full card of Premier League fixtures returns this weekend after the FA Cup break. Manchester United can extend their lead to 15 points on Saturday if they see off bottom of the table QPR. Man City play Chelsea on Sunday and anything but a win will surely see off any small title hopes. QPR could well find themselves adrift even more this weekend. Reading face Wigan so one of them will drop points. Aston Villa are at Arsenal whose confidence will be a major low after their Champions League defeat. On Sunday Newcastle host Southampton, so it’s a big weekend at the bottom of the Premier League.

The top four race will be interesting viewing this weekend. Chelsea who sit in third are at the champions Man City, so Arsenal will look to close the gap on them as they play Aston Villa on Saturday. Tottenham play their east London rivals West Ham on Monday night. Everton go to Carrow Road on Saturday and if their real top four contenders they will have to get all 3 points.

I predict wins for Arsenal Man United and Spurs. Can see Reading beating Wigan and Newcastle drawing with Southampton.

Also hope for the good of football Swansea win the Capital One Cup Sunday!

Is it time for women officials in top flight football?

Can they run they line? Can the referee a top flight game? Are they any better or worse than male referees? Or should they stick with the female version of the game? Richard Keys & Andy Gray have once again brought this issue in to football. Here are a few for’s and against women officials. The Pro’s Women have become part of modern day football. That is a fact. At all levels they plan the game and in some cases they run the show, for example Karen Brady. They now attend more games than they use to. You see them in the crowds, mainly in the home end sitting down not signing but they’re still there. There’s no reason to say they don’t know the rules of the game, especially the offside rule as its now become very, very vague to what it actually is! Bayern Munich 1-1 Chelsea - Chelsea win 4-3 on penalties (2012)

From the feedback so far on the blog for some reason Bayern Munich v Chelsea is the one a lot want to read and reflect on. I can't think why. Well the German side back in the final on their home patch surely it’s the perfect time for them to lift the Champions League again? Well football is not that easy and can be cruel. Roberto Di Matteo was named caretaker manager of Chelsea in March 2012 until the end of that season after the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas. What came in the few months after will forever be remembered in Chelsea’s history. Leading up to the final ‘leader’ John Terry was suspended after getting sent off in the semi-final against Barcelona. This was literally set up for Munich to win. Looking back at this game I remembered the surprise selection of Ryan Bertrand in the starting line up and Arjen Robben missing a lot of chances for Bayern, boy did he miss a lot. English sides in Champions League..

A look at the English sides in Champions League action this week. Real Madrid v Liverpool Out of form Liverpool head to Madrid which was always going to be the toughest game of the group. They were given a footballing master class at Anfield by the current European Champions as they won 3-0. Madrid are on a 11 game winning streak in all competitions and I only see that continuing. Liverpool are struggling, Mario Balotelli hasn't lived up to the hype, while Gerrard is struggling this season and it looks like he will be rested, or in other words 'dropped'. There is a clear over reliance on Raheem Sterling, if you keep him quite you keep Liverpool quite. They still can't defend, which cost them their first ever Premier League title. I see Real Madrid winning this 4-0 with Ronaldo scoring the first. Arsenal v Anderlecht Arsenal could practically seal their place in the knock-out stages of the Champions League with a win here.
