Bayern Munich 0-2 Inter Milan (2010)

To kick off my throwback review of Champions League finals the first brings us to Bayern Munich v Inter Milan in 2010 at the Santiago Bernabéu in Spain. It was the completion of a historic treble for Inter Milan as they also landed Serie A and the Coppa Italia that season. This was also Jose Mourinho's second Champions League victory.

The game was remembered for a display of master class finishing from Diego Milito who netted both goals for Inter. The second all his own work, taking on Van Buyten before slotting his right foot strike pass Butt in goal.

In true Mourinho fashion the Inter tactics were pretty much what many football fans of that time expected of him, soak up the pressure and hit on the counterattack. Robben pulled the strings for Bayern but he couldn't quite find the net, a very similar performance from him appears in a few years’ time which I will get to. For the German side this was a breakthrough season of one Thomas Muller, one of the modern day greats of the game, who if you didn't know is still scoring a load of goals for The Bavarians to this day.

The Inter forward line consisted of some star players of that time including Samuel Eto’o and Wesley Sneijder. Focusing on Sneijder that season or calendar year he was one of the finest players of that time. This was his only Champions League success, however 2010 saw the Dutchman collect UEFA Champions League top assist, UEFA Club midfielder of the year, selected in the 2010 World Cup Dream Team, a World Cup runners up medal, UEFA team of the year, and 4th in the Ballon D'Or. He was linked to Manchester United every summer transfer window but never played in the Premier League. Someone who did play in the Premier League in this side and was surprisingly OK in a awful QPR side was Julio Cesar who ended up at Loftus Road in 2012.

You can refresh your memory of the final here

Look out for my 2011 final review next.

Where has as it all gone wrong for Chelsea?

After Chelsea’s defeat in Germany to Bayer Leverkusen manager Andre Villas-Boas is a man under serious pressure no matter what he thinks. As Chelsea sank to their third defeat from their last five games I look into where has it gone wrong? Well Chelsea was on a run of six unbeaten going in to their game at Loftus Road towards the end of October. A game where Chelsea thought they would walk all over their London rivals. This didn’t happen that day in West London Chelsea lost the game and lost the plot. The repercussions of that match have still left an effect. QPR won 1-0, but the game will also be remembered for John Terry’s racist slur, Chelsea’s ill-disciplined team (7 yellows and 2 reds). Plus AVB was fined £12,000 after the game for comments made about the referee. Since that match Chelsea have only beaten Blackburn Rovers & Everton on penalties. Their defence looks weak, Terry is getting exposed and David Luiz is not the best partner. Centre of midfield is a problem, Lampard ...
As the dust settles and all the teams have played their first games at this year’s World Cup I look back at the early talking points of the tournament. England’s performance was not the best but it also wasn’t the worst. Rob Greens howler will live long in the memory of English football now. He will get hounded at every away ground next season just like James, Carson and Robinson have gone through. I think England will learn a lot from the USA game, and I truly think that Joe Cole has to be on the pitch. I would play him behind Rooney which means dropping Heskey even though he did play well on Saturday. My team on Friday would be, Green (One more chance to save his England career), Johnson, Terry, Dawson, A. Cole, Barry, Lennon, Lampard, Gerrard, J. Cole and Rooney. The most impressive team so far have been Germany. They walked all over Australia and with a very young side they could go a long way. Spain suffered the first World Cup shock when Switzerland beat them 1-0. Spain were the ...

Premier League 2015/16 Preview

Arsenal The Gunners are now running out of excuses to mount a serious title challenge. They have money, they have spent it, they have brought in one of the best keepers in the Premier League (Cech) so now can Arsenal finally go the distance and challenge again? We have seen them start slow then once the pressure is off end the season strong. Or they start fast then come to February time and crumble. What will we get this year? I will say Arsenal will do a lot better this year and get a lot closer to the number one spot points wise. An impressive pre season topped with Community Shield success their looking good, however I have them finishing 3rd this year. Key Man: Alexis Sanchez after what was an impressive first season in English football scoring 16 goals, Sanchez spent his summer guiding Chile to their first Copa America. I expect more of the same and for him to break the 20 goals barrier.   Aston Villa They survived last year off the back of Benteke goals, Delph and Grealish...
