A Quick Look...


A quick look back at how my Premier League picks went. I had Chelsea as the Champions, Antonio Conte's first season in English football could even land him a double. Chelsea were like a machine and just stormed there way to the title. As for the rest of the top 4 I had the Manchester clubs, only City though will be playing Champions League via league qualification though. Arsenal shockingly didn't make top 4! Fan TV on Thursday nights it seems for next season. For the drop the only one I got correct was Hull City, how could I not pick Sunderland! 

 In the Championship, Newcastle winning the league was pretty easy to call. Even though they made hard work of it. Going against Brighton was a bit of an own goal.  Sheffield Wednesday going up is still on the cards via the play-offs. To go down I got Rotherham United right. 

 For League One, Scunthorpe United got to the play-offs along with Millwall. The Lions are the ones with a chance of promotion this weekend as the face Bradford City at Wembley Stadium. Swindon Town were the only team I got right going down in League One.

 League Two was slightly better as Doncaster Rovers & Plymouth are going up. For the drop Newport survived by the skin of their teeth on the last day of the season.

After Chelsea’s defeat in Germany to Bayer Leverkusen manager Andre Villas-Boas is a man under serious pressure no matter what he thinks. As Chelsea sank to their third defeat from their last five games I look into where has it gone wrong? Well Chelsea was on a run of six unbeaten going in to their game at Loftus Road towards the end of October. A game where Chelsea thought they would walk all over their London rivals. This didn’t happen that day in West London Chelsea lost the game and lost the plot. The repercussions of that match have still left an effect. QPR won 1-0, but the game will also be remembered for John Terry’s racist slur, Chelsea’s ill-disciplined team (7 yellows and 2 reds). Plus AVB was fined £12,000 after the game for comments made about the referee. Since that match Chelsea have only beaten Blackburn Rovers & Everton on penalties. As the dust settles and all the teams have played their first games at this year’s World Cup I look back at the early talking points of the tournament. England’s performance was not the best but it also wasn’t the worst. Rob Greens howler will live long in the memory of English football now. He will get hounded at every away ground next season just like James, Carson and Robinson have gone through. I think England will learn a lot from the USA game, and I truly think that Joe Cole has to be on the pitch. I would play him behind Rooney which means dropping Heskey even though he did play well on Saturday. My team on Friday would be, Green (One more chance to save his England career), Johnson, Terry, Dawson, A. Cole, Barry, Lennon, Lampard, Gerrard, J. Cole and Rooney. The most impressive team so far have been Germany. They walked all over Australia and with a very young side they could go a long way. Is it time for women officials in top flight football?

Can they run they line? Can the referee a top flight game? Are they any better or worse than male referees? Or should they stick with the female version of the game? Richard Keys & Andy Gray have once again brought this issue in to football. Here are a few for’s and against women officials. The Pro’s Women have become part of modern day football. That is a fact. At all levels they plan the game and in some cases they run the show, for example Karen Brady. They now attend more games than they use to. You see them in the crowds, mainly in the home end sitting down not signing but they’re still there. There’s no reason to say they don’t know the rules of the game, especially the offside rule as its now become very, very vague to what it actually is! As long as their adequate and have the ability to do the job properly and fairly surely that’s all that matters. Could this be the key that brings a bit more respect in to the game of football?
