Easter Football

The fun and games of the Premier League returns over the Easter weekend I start my look at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal can end Liverpool’s top 4 hopes once and for all. Most of the attention at Anfield is on Raheem Sterling and his non contract talks. He wants trophies not money, Rodgers says he expects him to stay in the summer. I'm sure he said the same about Suarez too. If Sterling does stay it will be down to if Liverpool can pick up the FA Cup. That would mean a trophy which is what he wants. So let's see what happens in the summer. But for the match I pick Arsenal talking all 3 points.

Everton face the 'surprise' team of the year Southampton. Everyone's favourites to go down Ronald Koeman has proved what a good manager he is & squad he put together. The Saints are still in with a chance of European football that will be the aim to end a successful season on a high and I think they will win at Goodison Park.

Leicester rock bottom of the league face West Ham who seems to be on the beaches already. Leicester have been down on their luck of most of the season and I think this will end in a draw. Manchester United are back, well sort of. Wins over Tottenham and Liverpool have made their chances of a top 4 finish look a lot better. A win here over Aston Villa is all I can see. Hull have a tricky trip to South Wales and face Swansea. Hull are not in the drop zone however their run in is shocking now they could survive on the fact the 3 in the bottom at the minute bomb, however if one of them picks up some form Hull are bang in trouble. They will be in trouble come Saturday evening as I'm going for a Swansea victory.

West Brom only have to turn up to beat QPR more off the field distractions than on the pitch action for Rangers they look doomed. Would it be different if they sacked Redknapp sooner and got Pulis in? Chelsea with one hand on the title can tighten their grip Saturday evening as the face Stoke. I think Jose will try to see the title run-in in style for the title and try to remain unbeaten for the rest of the season. I can only see a win for Chelsea here.
Tottenham, well Harry Kane face Burnley who look the most likely out of the bottom 3 to stay up. They beat Manchester City at Turf Moor so they will be more then confident & I think they will get a point. Sunderland face the game of games Sunday as they play local rivals Newcastle, a win for them will be massive they seem to have Newcastle number recently with 4 derby wins in a row. Last time they played Adam Johnson got a late winner, what the Mackems would do for a repeat of that. Likewise Newcastle will be desperate to hit their rivals where it hurts with a win. I think though the Sunderland run will continue here. By the time Manchester City kick off against Crystal Palace they could be in fourth! This is where the Liverpool's bubble burst last year now City are not top but it could well be very damaging if they slip up here, which I think will happen, Pardew has his team playing well and under the lights if the Palace fans turn up it could be a banana skin City don't need.

Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool (2019)

On to the 2019 Champions League Final now as Liverpool returned after their heartbreak of last year and they faced Tottenham. An all English final for the first time since 2008.  Both these sides came through some unforgettable semi-finals. Liverpool turned around a 3-0 deficit against Barcelona. While Tottenham came through a hell of a tie against Ajax.  Coming into the match Spurs were left worrying about the fitness of Harry Kane. Kane came into the game struggling but declared himself fit for the match after missing the semi-final. For Liverpool, no real major injury concerns. It was the start that Liverpool fans could only dream of. After only 20 seconds Moussa Sissoko was penalised for 'handball' from a cross by Sadio Mane which seemed to hit his chest. His arm was out in an unnatural position and after a VAR check the penalty was given. It was down to Mo Salah who was so cruelly taken off injured last year to give Liverpool the lead, which the Egyptian did. ...

Is it time for women officials in top flight football?

Can they run they line? Can the referee a top flight game? Are they any better or worse than male referees? Or should they stick with the female version of the game? Richard Keys & Andy Gray have once again brought this issue in to football. Here are a few for’s and against women officials. The Pro’s Women have become part of modern day football. That is a fact. At all levels they plan the game and in some cases they run the show, for example Karen Brady. They now attend more games than they use to. You see them in the crowds, mainly in the home end sitting down not signing but they’re still there. There’s no reason to say they don’t know the rules of the game, especially the offside rule as its now become very, very vague to what it actually is! As long as their adequate and have the ability to do the job properly and fairly surely that’s all that matters. Could this be the key that brings a bit more respect in to the game of football? Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid (Real Madrid win 5-3 on penalties - 2016)

A repeat of the 2014 final now as Real Madrid faced city rivals Atletico. This time the setting was the San Siro in Milan. Zinedine Zidane was now the head coach of Real Madrid taking over the side in early January 2016, with pretty much the Champions League the only hope of success. This game was not as open as their encounter two years ago, but it still had its drama. Real took the league through fan favourite and one of my favourite players ever Sergio Ramos. The captain managed to get a touch on Gareth Bale’s flick on which saw it just go past Jan Oblak in goal.  Atletico had the perfect chance to level it up from the spot but their star Frenchman Antoine Griezmann’s penalty smashed off the bar and bounced out. Chances in this were few and far between with an excellent display in goal for Atletico by Oblak. With just over 10 minutes left on the clock Atletico finally found the net.
